Bjorbodin opened in 2017 beside the Kaldi brewery at Arskogssandur, and the treatment is what the name says: wooden tubs filled with warm water, young beer, hops and live brewer's yeast, taken for around twenty-five minutes with a beer tap beside the tub. The claimed benefit is for skin and hair from the yeast and hops rather than anything medical, and the operators do not overstate it. Afterwards guests rest in a warm room without showering, so the mixture stays on the skin. There are hot tubs outside looking over Eyjafjordur towards Hrisey, and a restaurant in the same building.
What you actually see
- Tubs of beer, water, hops and yeast - the treatment itself.
- A tap beside the tub - beer to drink while you soak.
- A rest without showering - the mixture left on the skin.
- Outdoor tubs over the fjord - looking towards Hrisey.
When to go
Year round, by booking. Two hours.
Honest expectations
Booking ahead is required and slots are limited. It is a novelty treatment at a spa price, and the health claims are mild. Anyone not drinking will find the value thinner. There is an age limit for the beer tubs.
Nearby
The Hrisey ferry leaves from the same village; Akureyri is south.
