Museum of Ethnography

The Neprajzi Muzeum moved in 2022 into a purpose-built home at the edge of Varosliget: a building shaped as a long curve that dips into the ground at both ends so its roof can be walked as a public terrace, with glass facades carrying a grid of metal pixels that render Hungarian and international folk motifs at building scale. The collection behind it is one of the largest ethnographic holdings in Europe, running to hundreds of thousands of objects, and the permanent display covers Hungarian rural life alongside material collected worldwide, from Oceania to Africa, much of it gathered by nineteenth-century Hungarian travellers. Temporary exhibitions are strong and the roof terrace is free to walk without a ticket.

When to go

Year round. Two to three hours. The roof terrace is worth walking at sunset and needs no ticket. Closed Mondays.

Good to know

The permanent display is dense and text-heavy; it rewards time rather than a quick pass. Much of the collection is in storage, not shown. The new building draws visitors who look at the architecture and skip the museum.
