Castle Hill rises above the Buda bank of the Danube, a UNESCO-listed royal quarter crowned by the great Buda Castle palace, the fairy-tale white turrets of the Fishermen's Bastion, and the colourful-roofed Matthias Church. From its ramparts spreads the classic panorama over the river, the bridges and the parliament on the far bank.

When to go
Year-round; a clear day for the panorama, and the hill is atmospheric floodlit at night. Early or late avoids the coach crowds at the Fishermen's Bastion.
Honest expectations
It is very popular, so the Fishermen's Bastion and church are busy, and the upper terraces of the bastion charge a small fee. The castle houses museums rather than furnished royal rooms. The grounds and views are free.
