Belen Gualcho

Belén Gualcho sits at about sixteen hundred metres in the western mountains, a Lenca village of adobe and tile around a colonial church with a white carved facade. The Sunday market is the reason people make the trip: it fills the streets before dawn with families down from the surrounding hills, selling produce, and it has kept its character in a way markets on the main roads have not. Trails from the village run to waterfalls and up into the Celaque massif.

When to go

November to April is the dry season and the best for the roads. Sunday is the market and the day to be there, arriving the night before if possible. Nights are cold.

What to expect

The roads in from either direction are rough mountain tracks and take longer than the distance suggests. Accommodation is one or two basic guesthouses. The market is a working one and photographing people needs asking.
