The Citadelle and Sans-Souci

The Citadelle Laferrière, crowning a mountain peak in northern Haiti, is one of the most magnificent and moving monuments in the Americas, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the enduring symbol of Haitian freedom. After Haiti won its independence in 1804 as the world's first black republic, born of the only successful large-scale slave revolt in history, its new leaders built this colossal fortress, one of the largest in the Americas, to defend the nation against any attempt to re-impose slavery. Its immense stone walls, bristling with hundreds of cannon, rise dramatically from the summit. Below stands the ruined grandeur of the Sans-Souci Palace, the royal seat of King Henri Christophe, together forming a powerful testament to liberty.

When to go

November to March, the drier, cooler season, for the best weather and the climb to the fortress, reached by a road to Milot and then a hike or a ride on horseback up the mountain; a guide enriches the profound history.
