Fort Picolet

Fort Picolet stands on the headland at the northern entrance to Cap-Haïtien bay, built in the eighteenth century to cover the approach to what was then the colony's main port, and extended afterwards. Cannon still lie on the terraces, the walls run along the cliff edge, and the sea breaks directly below. The walk out from town follows the shoreline past the Carénage district, which is half the point: it is a working waterfront the whole way.

• The bay mouth - the channel the fort was built to cover, with the town behind.
• The shore walk - the approach along the waterfront from Cap-Haitien.

When to go

November to March is dry and the walk is comfortable. Early morning or late afternoon avoids the worst heat on unshaded rock. The sea is loud below the walls when a northerly is running.

What to expect

There is no interpretation, no fencing and no maintained path inside the fort; the edges are unguarded and the drop is real. The walk out is unshaded. Guides attach themselves at the start of the walk and negotiating the arrangement up front avoids friction later.
