Surama sits in a pocket of savanna ringed by forested mountains in Guyana's interior, home to a Makushi community that decided in the 1990s to build and run its own tourism rather than have it done to them. The village owns the eco-lodge, trains its own guides, and channels income back into the community - a model now cited across the region. Visitors walk the forest with guides who name plants and their uses, climb Surama Mountain at dawn for the savanna panorama, paddle the Burro Burro river looking for otters and tapir, and spend evenings learning cassava processing or listening to Makushi stories.

What you actually see

  • Surama Mountain at dawn - the climb for mist over savanna and forest.
  • Burro Burro river trips - paddling for otters, tapir and river birds.
  • Guided forest walks - Makushi guides on plants, tracks and traditional use.
  • Village life - cassava processing, farming and the community-run lodge.

When to go

The drier months, broadly September to April in the interior, give firmer trails and easier road access. The wet season turns the Lethem road difficult and raises the rivers. Early mornings are the wildlife hours in any season.

Honest expectations

Getting here means either a long, rough overland journey on the Lethem road or a small-plane flight. The lodge is comfortable but simple - solar power, bucket showers in some huts, no phone signal. Wildlife is genuinely wild, so sightings need patience and luck. This is a living community, and respecting guidance about photography and access to certain areas matters.
