Moco Moco Falls

Moco Moco falls come down the Kanuku slope above the village of the same name, and the walk up follows the line of a small hydroelectric scheme built in the 1990s that was destroyed by a landslide and never repaired; its pipeline and abandoned works are part of the route. The climb is steeper and longer than Kumu, and the reward is a series of drops and pools with a view back out over the savannah.

What you actually see

• The cascades - a series of drops down the forested Kanuku slope.
• The abandoned hydro works - pipeline and buildings from the failed 1990s scheme.
• The pools - basins along the descent, cold enough to swim in.
• The savannah view - the Rupununi spread out from the upper part of the climb.

When to go

May to August, in the wet season, gives the fullest flow. September to April is drier and the track in is easier. Early morning avoids the worst of the heat on the climb.

Honest expectations

The climb is steep and slippery and takes about an hour each way. The abandoned hydro structures are derelict and unsafe to climb on. A community fee and guide are arranged at the village.
