Annai

Annai sits at the point where the Rupununi savannah runs into the forest at the foot of the Pakaraima mountains, and that transition is why the birding here is good: species from both habitats overlap within a short distance. Rock View Lodge on the ridge has operated for decades and works with the surrounding Macushi villages, which run trips onto the savannah, up the Pakaraima foothills and onto the Rupununi river. It is the usual first stop coming into the Rupununi from the north.

When to go

September to April is the dry season and the main window. The wet season from May to August floods the savannah and cuts the road. Early morning is best for birds.

Honest expectations

The overland road from Georgetown is long and rough; most visitors fly to the nearby strip. Accommodation is limited to the lodge and community options. Prices for a remote lodge are high.
