Nzérékoré is the largest city of Guinée Forestière, the forested southeast, sitting close to the borders with Liberia and Côte d'Ivoire in country that is greener and wetter than the rest of Guinea. Its market is large and draws from all three sides. The city is the base for reaching Ziama, Bossou and Mount Nimba, and the culture here is Kpelle, Kissi and Guerzé rather than Fulani or Malinké. It is one of the largest cities in Guinea - the latest census puts it third nationally, behind Conakry and Kankan.

What you actually see

  • The market - the trading centre for the forest region and three borders.
  • The forest setting - wetter, greener country than the rest of Guinea.
  • The base function - the point for reaching Ziama, Bossou and Nimba.
  • The forest peoples - Kpelle, Kissi and Guerzé rather than Fulani.

When to go

November to February is the drier season. The long rains from March to October are very heavy here. Market days are busiest.

Honest expectations

The road from Conakry is very long and in poor condition; flights are the practical option. Facilities are basic. Border proximity means checkpoints throughout the region.

Nearby

Ziama is northwest, and Mount Nimba is southeast.
