Eternity Fjord

Kangerlussuatsiaq, called Evighedsfjorden or Eternity Fjord in Danish, runs inland from near Maniitsoq between walls that rise to around two thousand metres straight from the water, with glaciers coming down to the fjord and calving into it at several points. It is among the more dramatic fjords on the west coast and is used for boat trips, kayaking and as the base for heli-skiing descents. There is no settlement along it. The name in Danish, Evighedsfjorden, was given by eighteenth-century whalers who found the inlet seemed to run on without end as they worked their way up it.

• The ski descents - the lines run from the peaks down to the water.

When to go

June to September is the boat and kayak season. April and May for skiing. Weather and ice cancel trips.

Good to know

There is no road and no settlement; access is by chartered boat. Trips are cancelled in weather. There are no facilities anywhere along the fjord.
