Portitsa Gorge

Portitsa means little door, and the name describes the place exactly: the Venetikos river has cut a narrow gate through a limestone ridge, and at the entrance stands a single-arch stone bridge of 1743, built by masons from Epirus, framing the gorge mouth. A path descends from the road to the bridge in about fifteen minutes, and from there walkers continue into the canyon along the water, wading or swimming through pools between walls that rise vertically and close to a few metres apart. The water is cold and clear, with deep green basins. Beyond the first section the gorge becomes a genuine canyoning route requiring ropes. Above, the village of Spilaio has a monastery and views over the Venetikos valley.

When to go

June to September, when water levels drop enough for the walk in; spring flows make the gorge dangerous. High summer is best for swimming, as the water stays cold all year.

Good to know

Reaching the water involves a steep path down and back up, and going beyond the entrance means getting wet and scrambling on slippery rock. There are no facilities, no signage inside and no phone signal in the gorge. Canyoning sections need a guide.
