Chios Mastic Villages

The mastic tree grows around the Mediterranean, but only in southern Chios does it reliably weep resin worth harvesting, and that single fact shaped the whole region. Growers clear and sweep the ground under each tree, score the bark in summer and come back to collect hardened tears, then clean them by hand, one at a time. The villages that grew from the trade were built as closed defensive blocks with no outward-facing doors: Mesta is entered through low tunnels under the houses, Pyrgi covers every facade in xysta, incised black and white geometry applied wall to wall. UNESCO listed the cultivation knowledge itself in 2014.

When to go

July to September is when the work is visible, with swept ground under the trees and collection under way; outside that window you see the villages but not the craft. Spring is pleasant for the drive and the villages are empty. Summer midday in the stone lanes is hot but shaded. Museum hours are shorter off-season and some village shops close entirely.

Honest expectations

The harvest is slow, quiet work and watching it is less dramatic than the description suggests. Pyrgi's central square is set up for coach visits and the surrounding lanes are the better part. Mastic's flavour, resinous and faintly pine-like, genuinely divides people, and small jars are expensive. Village roads are narrow, and off-season the whole south of the island can feel shut.
