Rothenburg ob der Tauber is the best-preserved medieval walled town in Germany, a fairytale of half-timbered houses, red roofs, gate towers and cobbled lanes ringed by intact ramparts you can walk. The jewel of the Romantic Road, its picture-perfect corners, like the much-photographed Plonlein where two lanes meet beneath the towers, make it one of the most charming small towns in Europe.

What you actually see

  • The town walls - the intact ramparts you can walk around the town.
  • The Plonlein - the famous fork of lanes beneath two towers.
  • The half-timbered lanes - the cobbled streets of medieval houses.
  • The Christmas atmosphere - the year-round Christmas shop and December market.

When to go

Late spring to autumn for warm weather; December for the Christmas market, when it is magical but busy. Staying overnight lets you enjoy the town once the day-trippers and coach tours leave.

Honest expectations

It is very popular with coach tours, so the centre is busy by day; early morning and evening, once the day-trippers leave, are magical and quiet. It is small, seen in a day. Its perfection can feel a touch like a film set, but it is genuine.

Nearby

The Romantic Road runs through it toward Fussen and Neuschwanstein; Wurzburg is to the north.
