Langeoog

Langeoog is about twenty square kilometres, mostly dune and salt marsh, with a beach running some fourteen kilometres along the seaward side. Private cars are prohibited: goods move by a small railway from the harbour and by electric vehicles, and residents and visitors use bicycles and handcarts. The Melkhörndüne, at about twenty metres, is the highest dune on the German North Sea coast and is climbed by a stair for the view. The island lies in the Wadden Sea national park, and the salt marshes on the landward side are important for breeding and migrating birds. A water tower of 1909 stands on the dunes.

When to go

May to September; ferries run to the tide table and can be cancelled in storms. The island is very quiet from November to March with limited services.

Before you go

No cars means everything is carried or wheeled from the ferry. Ferries are tide-dependent, so arrival times are awkward. The North Sea is cold.
