Koblenz and Deutsches Eck

The Deutsches Eck is the point of land where the Moselle meets the Rhine, an artificial headland extended in the nineteenth century, carrying a large equestrian monument to Wilhelm I erected in 1897, destroyed in 1945 and re-erected in 1993. For the 2011 federal garden show a cable car was built across the Rhine to the Ehrenbreitstein fortress, with cabins of eighteen people; it was to be dismantled afterwards because of the UNESCO listing, but after negotiation and a technical review it was allowed to stay until 2026 and then longer. The old town behind holds squares, churches and the Görresplatz history column.

When to go

April to October; the cable car runs year-round with maintenance breaks and closes in high wind. Rhine in Flames brings fireworks and crowds in August.

Honest expectations

The cable car closes in wind and for maintenance. The confluence itself is a viewpoint, quickly seen. Cruise crowds fill the headland at midday.
