Illustrative image - a scene in the spirit of the place, not a photograph of it. Real photos are below.
Jasmund is Germany's smallest national park and one of its most theatrical - a white wall of chalk rearing from the Baltic along Rugen's northeastern shore, crowned by beech forest so old and undisturbed that it is inscribed among Europe's World Heritage beech woods. The Konigsstuhl, the King's Chair, is the headline cliff at 118 metres; since 2023 an elliptical skywalk has floated visitors out above it, step-free, for the long view down the coast Caspar David Friedrich painted in 1818. The high shore path from Sassnitz runs the clifftop through green twilight, breaking out at viewpoints like the Victoria-Sicht where the chalk drops sheer to a turquoise-streaked sea; below, a shingle shore collects flint and fallen chalk after every storm. The cliffs retreat a little each winter - which is precisely why the paths keep their respectful distance.
What you actually see
- The Skywalk - the elliptical walkway hovering above the Konigsstuhl.
- The high shore path - clifftop beech forest from Sassnitz to the King's Chair.
- The Victoria-Sicht - the classic ledge view of white chalk over turquoise water.
- The shingle shore - flint and chalk fragments beneath the white wall.
When to go
May to September for the beech canopy and the sea's best colours; autumn storms stage the cliffs in drama. Early morning beats both the coaches and the flat midday light.
Honest expectations
The Konigsstuhl is reached through the paid National Park Centre - the free viewpoints along the shore path are honest alternatives. Cars stop at Hagen with a shuttle or forest walk onward. Cliff edges genuinely crumble; the marked paths are not a suggestion.
Nearby
Sassnitz harbour, the resort piers of Binz and Cape Arkona at Rugen's northern tip.
