Kobuleti

Kobuleti runs for several kilometres along the Black Sea coast north of Batumi as a single strip of hotels, guest houses and cafes behind a pebble beach, and it is the older and quieter of the two Adjaran resorts, busy in July and August and largely shut the rest of the year. Behind the town, in a landscape most beach visitors never notice, lie the Ispani mires: raised peat bogs fed only by rainfall, an unusual formation at this latitude and one of the components of the Colchic Rainforests and Wetlands World Heritage property inscribed in 2021. A boardwalk in the protected area allows the bog to be walked over without damaging it.

When to go

June to September for the beach; the bogs are best in spring and autumn. A day. Out of season most of the resort closes. The bog needs its own trip and a guide is useful.

Honest expectations

The beach is pebble, not sand, and the strip is a wall of undistinguished hotels. Out of season the town is empty and shut. The bogs are separate from the beach and poorly signposted. Summer crowds fill the front.
