Tanji Fish Market

Come late afternoon, Tanji's beach becomes the greatest free spectacle on the Gambian coast: brightly painted pirogues surf through the shorebreak, crews leap into the shallows, and headloads of bonga shad, ladyfish and butterfish stream up the sand to auctions conducted at shout-speed. Behind the beach, the smokehouses take over - low sheds where bonga cures over smouldering fires into the preserved staple that travels across West Africa, wrapping the whole village in fragrant blue haze. Gulls wheel, donkey carts stack crates, and the visitor's job is simply to stand out of the way and watch an economy happen.

What to look for

• The pirogue landings - painted boats surfing ashore fully loaded.
• The sand auctions - fish sold at full volume as it lands.
• The smokehouses - bonga curing in the blue haze behind the beach.
• The gull-and-cart ballet - the whole working beach at golden hour.

When to go

Late afternoon into sunset any day - that is when the fleet returns; mornings show the quiet smokehouse side. November to April adds comfortable heat and the birding of the Tanji reserve next door.

Good to know

This is a hard-working place, not a staged attraction: it is loud, pungent, chaotic and slippery underfoot - wear shoes you forgive and keep cameras respectful, asking before close portraits. Freelance guides attach themselves quickly; a polite arrangement or a polite no both work. The smell stays in clothes as a souvenir.
