Sanyang Beach

Sanyang, sometimes called Paradise Beach, is a long stretch of pale sand on the south coast backed by palms, with a line of simple wooden beach bars along it and fishing pirogues pulled up at one end. It is the beach people drive out from the hotel strip to reach, quieter and less built up, though the road down has improved and it is no longer the secret it was.

What you actually see

• The palm-backed sand - a long stretch of coast under coconut palms.
• The beach bars - the wooden places strung along the shore.
• The pirogues - the fishing boats worked from one end of the beach.
• The length - enough sand to walk well away from everyone.

When to go

November to February is the cool dry season. The rains from June to October close most of the bars. Weekends bring visitors from the coast strip.

Honest expectations

The Atlantic here has strong currents and there is no lifeguard. Beach bars close in the low season. Bumsters, the men who attach themselves to visitors, work this beach and can be persistent.
