Papaïchton

Papaïchton is the traditional capital of the Aluku people, the seat of their paramount chief, the Gran Man, on the upper Maroni where the river runs between forest banks and the villages follow their own law alongside the French one. There is no road: access is by pirogue up the rapids or by air via Maripasoula. The riverbank quarters keep traditional carved houses among the newer concrete.

When to go

July to November is the dry season, when rapids are harder but travel is more reliable overall. High water in the wet season speeds the pirogues. Either way the river rules the schedule.

Honest expectations

Getting there is the hard part: pirogue days or small flights, both weather-dependent. Accommodation is minimal and arrangements are made locally. Visitors are guests in a traditional society and should behave accordingly.
