Papaïchton

Papaïchton is the traditional capital of the Aluku people, the seat of their paramount chief, the Gran Man, on the upper Maroni where the river runs between forest banks and the villages follow their own law alongside the French one. There is no road: access is by pirogue up the rapids or by air via Maripasoula. The riverbank quarters keep traditional carved houses among the newer concrete.

Background

Granman Ochi founded the village in 1895, and in 1965 Granman Tolinga moved the tribe's capital here from Boniville. The commune covers 2628 square kilometres along the Lawa River, on the border with Suriname, and air links run through Maripasoula Airport. It counted 284 inhabitants in 1967 and 5006 in 2023. Cottica Mountain dominates the commune, rising to 744 metres. Scientists paid it little attention until 2005, when two naturalists began studying the area and found a remarkable range of species. In 2014 an area of 4813 hectares was designated a ZNIEFF, a zone recognised as an important natural environment.

When to go

July to November is the dry season, when rapids are harder but travel is more reliable overall. High water in the wet season speeds the pirogues. Either way the river rules the schedule.

Before you go

Getting there is the hard part: pirogue days or small flights, both weather-dependent. Accommodation is minimal and arrangements are made locally. Visitors are guests in a traditional society and should behave accordingly.
