Parc Oriental de Maulevrier

Alexandre Marcel, an architect who had worked on Japanese pavilions for the 1900 Paris exposition, laid out this garden around a lake from 1899, importing plants and stone lanterns and arranging it as a Japanese stroll garden where the circuit reads as a day and a human life. After the death of his widow in 1945 it was abandoned, and by the 1980s it had reverted to brambles; the commune bought it and cleared it, finding the original structures under the growth. It now covers about twenty-nine hectares with a red bridge, tea pavilion, azaleas, Japanese maples and a large collection of bonsai.

History

The park was created between 1899 and 1913 in the grounds of the Château Colbert by the Parisian architect Alexandre Marcel (1860-1928), designer of the Cambodian pavilion at the 1900 Exposition Universelle, for the château's industrialist owner, whose daughter he married; its Khmer elements were cast from moulds made for the exhibition. After his death his widow stayed on until her own death in 1945, after which the park lay abandoned for 40 years. The estate was divided in 1976, the commune bought the park in 1980, restoration began in 1987 from photographs and memories, and in 2004 it was named a Jardin Remarquable (Wikipedia, Parc Oriental de Maulévrier).

When to go

Late April to early June for azaleas and rhododendrons, October to November for maple colour. Summer is green but flat. Night illuminations run on set summer dates and need booking.

Before you go

It closes entirely in winter, roughly December to February. Peak azalea weekends are crowded. The garden is Japanese in style but planted and maintained in a French setting, and purists notice.
