The Design District is not a place so much as a label: around two hundred shops, studios, galleries, museums and restaurants across roughly twenty-five streets in central Helsinki, mainly in Punavuori and the blocks around it, marked with a shared window sticker and mapped so that they can be walked as a route. What it covers ranges from the established Finnish design houses and their flagship stores to small independent makers working in ceramics, textiles, jewellery and furniture in ground-floor studios, along with antique and vintage dealers. The Design Museum sits within the area, and the annual Helsinki Design Week in September programmes events across it.

What you actually see

  • Independent maker studios - ceramics, textiles and jewellery at street level.
  • Finnish design house stores - the established brands in the same streets.
  • The Design Museum - the collection within the district.
  • Vintage and antique dealers - the second-hand end of the trade.

When to go

Year round; September brings Helsinki Design Week. Half a day walking. Many small studios close on Sundays and keep short Saturday hours. Check individual opening times.

Honest expectations

It is a marketing label as much as a neighbourhood, and the sticker in a window does not guarantee anything. Prices are high. Many of the small studios keep limited hours and some are open by appointment only. Sunday is a poor day for it.

Nearby

The Kamppi chapel is north; the market square lies east.
