Tavuni Hill Fort

Tavuni stands on a limestone ridge above a bend in the Sigatoka river, fortified in the eighteenth century by a Tongan chief and his followers who settled in the valley. Excavation in the 1980s exposed the terraces, house platforms, defensive ditch and a rock that was used for executions, and the site is now interpreted with a visitor centre and a guided walk. The position explains itself: the ridge commands the river in both directions.

When to go

May to October is the drier season and the best for the climb. Mornings are cooler on the exposed ridge. The site is open daily.

Good to know

The climb up from the car park is steep and unshaded. What survives is earthworks and stone platforms rather than structures, so the guide carries the visit. The execution stone is presented dramatically and the evidence for it is thinner than the telling.
