Port Howard

Port Howard sits on the eastern side of West Falkland below Mount Maria, one of the larger farm settlements in the islands with around forty people, a shearing shed, a small museum and a lodge. Sea trout fishing on the rivers around it is the main draw, and the settlement is the arrival point for the ferry crossing from East Falkland. The country behind rises to hills and stone runs. The settlement dates from the 1860s and was one of the first farms established on West Falkland.

When to go

October to April is the season. Sea trout fishing runs through the summer months. Winter is severe and services minimal.

Honest expectations

Accommodation is a single lodge and books up in the fishing season. FIGAS flights and the ferry are both weather-dependent. There is very little else in the settlement.
