UNESCO World Heritage
The Gedeo landscape covers the steep eastern escarpment above the Rift near Dilla, where an agroforestry system developed over centuries supports one of the densest rural populations in Africa without clearing the forest: enset and coffee are grown in layers beneath retained indigenous shade trees, with terraces holding the slopes and a body of customary law regulating who may cut what. Sacred forests are preserved around ritual sites, and the area also holds megalithic stelae fields, including Tutu Fela and Chelba Tutitti, with hundreds of carved and phallic stones. UNESCO inscribed the landscape in 2023 for the combination of the farming system, the sacred groves and the megaliths. Visitor infrastructure is minimal and seeing it means walking with a local guide.
What you actually see
- Layered agroforestry - coffee and enset under retained shade trees.
- Terraced escarpment - hillsides held by centuries-old terracing.
- Sacred forests - groves preserved around ritual sites.
- Stelae fields - carved megaliths at Tutu Fela and Chelba Tutitti.
When to go
October to March for the roads and walking. Coffee harvest runs roughly October to December and is the most active time. The rains from June to September make the steep tracks difficult.
Honest expectations
There is almost no visitor infrastructure despite the World Heritage listing: no centre, few signs, and access is through local guides arranged in Dilla. The landscape is farmland and reads as such rather than as a monument. Walking on the escarpment is steep. Stelae sites are fenced but lightly interpreted.
Nearby
Yirgacheffe lies within the region; Hawassa is north.
