Dorze Village

The Dorze live in the Gamo highlands above Arba Minch at around 2,700 metres, and two things define what visitors come to see. Their houses are built from bamboo and enset leaf, standing several metres high with a projecting entrance that gives them the look of an elephant's head; when termites eat the base the whole structure is lifted and moved, shrinking over decades until it becomes a store. And they weave: Dorze cotton cloth is sold across Ethiopia and the looms are set up in most compounds. Visits include a demonstration of enset processing into kocho bread, distilled araki, and the weaving. The climb up from the Rift floor is steep and the temperature drops noticeably.

When to go

October to March for the roads. The Gamo highlands are cool and often misty at 2,700 metres, so warm clothes matter. Market days in nearby Chencha show the cloth trade.

What to expect

The village visit is a set presentation of house, weaving, enset and araki, repeated for every group, and it can feel packaged. Payment is expected at several points and purchases are pressed. The road up is steep and rough. It is cold and damp compared with Arba Minch below.
