Tuhala Witch's Well

Tuhala sits on a karst field where the Tuhala river runs underground through limestone. When snowmelt overloads that channel, the pressure has nowhere to go but up, and water erupts out of the top of an old stone well at up to a hundred litres a second - visibly boiling over the rim and flooding the ground around it. The folk explanation was that the witches of Tuhala were beating themselves with birch whisks in the sauna underground.

What you actually see

• The well - a plain circular stone shaft with a wooden surround, still for most of the year.
• The eruption - a column of clear water pushing up and pouring over the stonework in every direction, with the meadow around it under water.
• The duration - anything from a few hours to a few days, and not in every year.
• The karst trail - a twenty-minute walk across the field past sinkholes where the river disappears and resurfaces.

When to go

Late March to mid-April is the only realistic window, and only after a winter with real snow. At any other time the karst trail and the sinkholes are open and worth a short walk, but the well will be still.

Honest expectations

It does not run to a schedule and it does not run every year. Warm winters produce nothing at all, and even in good years the eruption can begin and end within a day. Local monitoring and news reports are the only reliable signal - a calendar is useless here.

Travelling specifically for it is a gamble. Treat it as a bonus while you are near Tallinn rather than a fixed plan.

Tallinn is forty minutes northwest. The Kose and Kõrvemaa forest area, with RMK trails and campfire sites, lies immediately east.
