Toolse Castle Ruins

Toolse was built from 1471 by the Livonian Order to protect the harbour at Kunda and the trade running along this coast, and it was the last castle the Order raised in Estonia. It was fought over repeatedly through the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries and abandoned as a ruin. What stands is a substantial shell on a low headland directly above the sea: walls, the base of the round tower, vaulted cellars and window openings, with grass inside and the Gulf of Finland immediately beyond. It is unstaffed and free, with a path from a small car park and no barriers, which makes it an unusually direct encounter with a medieval ruin.

When to go

May to September for the approach and the coast; the ruin is accessible year round with no gate. Late light suits the walls. Winter storms drive spray over the headland.

Good to know

The ruin is unstabilised in parts with loose masonry, and there are no barriers at the drops. There is no interpretation, staff or facility. The site is small and takes under an hour. The car park track is rough.
