The Rio Sapo runs through the pine and oak highlands of northern Morazan, and it is unusual in El Salvador for being genuinely clear: most rivers in the country carry sediment or pollution, and this one runs over rock and gravel with visible bottom, in a protected catchment where the forest has been kept. Pools along its course are used for swimming, and community-run camping and cabin areas sit on the bank, with trails through the forest around them. The area is managed through local associations that charge for access and camping. The highlands here are cooler than the rest of the country, and the forest holds birds not found at lower altitudes.

What you actually see

  • The clear river - the water running over rock and gravel.
  • Swimming pools - the deeper basins along the course.
  • Pine and oak forest - the highland woodland of the catchment.
  • Community camping - the managed camp and cabin areas on the bank.

When to go

November to April in the dry season, when the water is clearest and the roads passable; the rains raise the river and make the tracks difficult. Nights in the highlands are cold. Weekends bring local visitors.

Honest expectations

Access is through community associations with charges that vary by point. Facilities are basic camping and simple cabins. Roads in are rough. The water is cold and the river can rise quickly after rain upstream.

Nearby

Perquin lies east; the Honduran border is north.
