Old Cataract Hotel

The Thomas Cook company built the Old Cataract in 1899 for the winter travellers it brought up the Nile, and it stands on a pink granite bluff directly above the river looking across to Elephantine Island and the west bank desert, which is the finest hotel position in Egypt and the reason it has never lost its reputation. The building is Moorish revival in red brick with arched loggias and high ceilings, restored in a long project completed in 2011. Its literary association is with Agatha Christie, who stayed here and used the setting in Death on the Nile, and the hotel has traded on that ever since. Non-residents can sit on the terrace for tea at a set minimum charge, which is the usual way visitors see it.

History

Thomas Cook built the Cataract Hotel in 1899 to house the European travellers it brought to Aswan, then spelled Assouan, and it opened on 8 January 1900 with 120 rooms on two floors; it did so well that a third floor with 100 more rooms was added in 1902, together with a dining room designed by the architect Henri Favarger. Its guests included Tsar Nicholas II, Howard Carter and Agatha Christie, who set part of Death on the Nile here, and the 1978 film of the novel was shot at the hotel. A modern tower wing, the New Cataract, was added in 1961, and the original building came to be called the Old Cataract. Both wings closed from 2008 to 2011 for a full restoration that joined them into one hotel, the historic wing becoming the Palace Wing with 76 rooms and 45 suites, and it reopened on 18 October 2011 as the Sofitel Legend Old Cataract Aswan; Mandarin Oriental took over the management on 1 May 2026, and the hotel is to take the name Mandarin Oriental Old Cataract when the renovation of the tower wing ends in July 2027 (Wikipedia, Old Cataract Hotel).

When to go

October to April. Late afternoon on the terrace for sunset over the west bank, which is the whole point. Two hours. Booking the terrace ahead is wise in high season.

Things to know

Non-guests are charged a substantial minimum spend to sit on the terrace and the dress code is enforced. Room rates are among the highest in Egypt. The Christie connection is marketed heavily. The newer wing next door is a different and much plainer building. Mandarin Oriental took over management in May 2026 and renovation runs until mid-2027, so check whether the terrace is taking non-guests.
