Hammam Pharaon

On the western Sinai coast a line of hot springs emerges at the base of a cliff and runs across a narrow beach into the Gulf of Suez, at temperatures around seventy degrees where it leaves the rock, cooling as it crosses the sand. People bathe where the hot water mixes with the sea, and the heavily sulphurous water is used locally for rheumatic complaints. Behind the beach are natural steam caves in the cliff, where hot vapour collects and which are used as a rough sauna, and a small mosque and shrine stand beside them. The name attaches the place to a Pharaoh of legend. Facilities are minimal and the site is essentially a local bathing spot rather than a developed spa.

When to go

October to April, when air temperatures make hot bathing pleasant. Fridays bring local visitors. Half a day including the drive. Early morning is quietest and the steam caves are least crowded.

Practical notes

The water is very hot where it emerges and burns are possible; test before entering. The smell of sulphur is strong. Facilities are basic and changing arrangements are minimal, which affects women in particular. Litter around the beach is a problem.
