Abdeen Palace

Khedive Ismail built Abdeen in the 1860s and 1870s and moved the government down from the Citadel into it, which ended seven centuries of ruling Cairo from the hill. The palace is European in plan and decoration, with French and Italian architects and a run of state rooms in gilt and marble, and it stayed the royal residence until 1952. Part of the complex is still used by the presidency, so what visitors see is the museum wing: an arms collection running from medieval swords to nineteenth-century pistols, a large silver and plate collection, royal decorations and the gifts of state that accumulated over eighty years, and a historical documents section. The grand state apartments themselves are generally not on the public route, which is the main disappointment of a visit.

When to go

October to April. Mornings on weekdays; the museum closes on some public holidays and during official functions with no notice. Two hours covers the open wings. Bring a passport, as identification is checked at the gate.

Honest expectations

Security is tight because the presidency uses part of the site, and cameras and phones may be restricted. The state apartments are usually closed, so the visit is museum rooms rather than palace interiors. Closures at short notice are common. Labelling is thin.
