Congolese Rumba

Congolese rumba came out of the meeting between Cuban records arriving in Léopoldville and Brazzaville in the 1930s and 40s and the older music of the Congo basin those records had themselves descended from, and it turned into the dominant popular music of central Africa. Guitars carry the melody in interlocking lines, the sebene section lets them run over a driving rhythm, and the dance is a slow-turning couple's step. UNESCO inscribed it in 2021 as a joint nomination by both Congos.

• The guitar lines - interlocking parts that carry the melody rather than chords.
• The sebene - the extended instrumental section where the lead guitar and the dancers take over.
• The bars of Kinshasa - open-air venues and clubs where bands play through the night.
• The lineage - a music that crossed to Cuba, returned on record and came back changed.

When to go

Year-round; live music runs every week in Kinshasa and starts late, often after midnight. The dry season from May to September is more comfortable for open-air venues. Major bands announce shows at short notice.

Honest expectations

Live venues run to their own timing and a band advertised for ten may start at one. Getting around Kinshasa after dark takes local arrangement. What is presented to visitors as rumba in hotels is not the same thing as a neighbourhood bar with a working band.
