Red Rocks of Calibishie

At Pointe Baptiste near Calibishie, a bed of deep red volcanic clay has been eroded by rain and sea into a shelf of ridges, channels and rounded steps running down to the water, in a colour that has nothing else like it on the island. The formation is small, perhaps a couple of hundred metres across, and it takes twenty minutes to walk over. The Atlantic breaks on the rocks below and offshore islets stand out to sea.

When to go

December to April is dry and the rock is safest underfoot. Wet clay is extremely slippery. Late afternoon light deepens the colour.

Practical notes

Wet clay is dangerously slippery and people fall regularly. The site is small and half an hour covers it. There is no shade and no facilities.
