The Infinite Bridge

The Infinite Bridge was built for a sculpture festival in 2015 as a temporary work and proved popular enough to be reinstalled each year since: a circle of oak decking sixty metres across on wooden piles, half of it standing over the sea and half on the beach, so you walk out over the water, round, and back onto the sand without ever reaching a destination. It has no purpose beyond the walk and the frame it puts around the bay, and that is the point: the circle turns the horizon into something you move along rather than look at. It sits below the Marselisborg forest on the coast path south of Aarhus and is free and open at all hours, with swimmers using it as a jumping platform in summer.

What to look for

• A sixty-metre circle over the water - half pier, half beach.
• The framed horizon - the bay seen from every angle as you walk round.
• Swimmers using it as a platform - the summer local habit.
• The coast path setting - forest above and the bay below.

When to go

May to October, when the bridge is installed; it is taken down for the winter and the dates vary each year, so confirm before travelling. One hour. Sunrise and sunset are the reasons to time it.

What to expect

It is seasonal and simply not there for much of the year. Photographs make it look isolated; on warm evenings it is busy. There are no facilities. Jumping from the deck is popular and the water is shallow in places, which is a real risk.
