Lindholm Hoje

Lindholm Hoje is a burial ground on a low hill north of the Limfjord, used for roughly five hundred years from the late Iron Age into the Viking period. Around seven hundred graves are marked out with standing stones, and many of them are laid in the pointed oval of a ship, so the hillside reads as a fleet in grass. The site survived because drifting sand buried it, sealing the graves and an adjoining ploughed field until excavation uncovered them again. The museum at the foot of the hill explains the layers and shows the finds; the field itself is open ground you can walk at any hour.

When to go

The field is open all year and free, but late spring to early autumn gives you dry ground and long light. Early morning or the last hour before sunset throws shadows that make the stone outlines legible. The museum keeps shorter winter hours, so check first if you want the context before you walk up.

Honest expectations

It is a hillside of grey stones in grass, and photographs rarely convey the scale. There is no shelter and the wind off the fjord is constant. The walk up is gentle but the ground is uneven. Coach parties arrive through the middle of the day in summer. Allow the museum, or the field alone feels thin.
