Trebic Jewish Quarter and Saint Procopius Basilica

Trebic preserves something rare: an entire small-town Jewish quarter with its street plan intact, roughly a hundred and twenty houses packed between the river and a rock face, laid out in narrow lanes with passages cut under buildings because there was no room to grow outward. Two synagogues survive, known as the Front and the Rear, the latter with painted walls and an exhibition explaining how the quarter was built up. On the hillside above lies a cemetery of several thousand stones under trees. Across the river stands Saint Procopius Basilica, a former monastery church where late Romanesque and early Gothic meet, with a crypt of low vaults and a heavily carved north portal.

When to go

April to October for walking and for full opening at the synagogues and basilica, which run guided entries at set times and close on Mondays for part of the year. The basilica is cold inside even in summer. Late afternoon light suits the lanes, which are narrow and shaded for most of the day.

Honest expectations

The quarter is a lived-in residential area with cars parked in the lanes and some houses in poor condition, so it does not look curated. Signage is limited and the layout is easy to lose. The basilica and the synagogues sit on opposite sides of a valley, which adds a steep walk between them.

The Vysocina highlands surround the town, and Brno is about an hour and a half east.
