Polis sits where the Akamas peninsula meets Chrysochous Bay and is the antidote to the Paphos coast: a small square of tavernas under trees, a working market town behind it, and a long shingle-and-sand beach a kilometre away with a campsite among planted eucalyptus. Ancient Marion, one of the island's city-kingdoms, stood here, and a small archaeological museum holds what has been excavated. It is the base most walkers use for the Akamas.

When to go
April to June and September to November are the best. Summer is hot but far less crowded than the south coast. Winter is quiet with many places closed.
Honest expectations
The beach is shingle in stretches rather than the sand of the south coast. There is little to do in town beyond eat and walk. Bus connections to Paphos are infrequent.
