Agros sits at around a thousand metres in the Pitsilia hills and is known across the island for two things: damask roses, grown in terraced plots and distilled into rosewater, oil and preserves at family workshops in the village, and cured pork, made here in the traditional way. The rose harvest runs through May and is when the village is at its busiest, with a festival and the stills working. The rest of the year it is a quiet mountain village with good walking around it.
What you actually see
- The rose distilleries - family workshops distilling damask rose into water and oil.
- The rose terraces - plots on the slopes around the village, in flower in May.
- The cured meats - traditional pork curing sold from village producers.
- The mountain setting - Pitsilia hills and terraced slopes on all sides.
When to go
May is the rose harvest and the reason most people come. April to November is comfortable otherwise. Winter is cold and quiet with many workshops closed.
Honest expectations
Outside the May harvest the distilleries are not running and the visit is mostly shopping. Roads into Pitsilia are winding and slow. The village itself is modern in appearance rather than picturesque.
Nearby
Machairas monastery is northeast, and the Troodos peaks are west.
