The Blue Room is a chamber in the limestone coast west of Santa Cruz whose entrance sits just below the waterline, so getting in means taking a breath and ducking under the lip before surfacing inside. Light coming through the submerged opening turns the water and the whole chamber an intense blue. Boats and kayaks run to it from Santa Cruz. The swim in is short but it needs a calm sea and reasonable confidence in the water.

What you actually see

  • The blue light - sunlight through the submerged entrance filling the chamber.
  • The duck dive - the short breath-hold under the lip to get inside.
  • The chamber - the limestone room with air above the water inside.
  • The coastal approach - the boat or kayak run along the cliffs from Santa Cruz.

When to go

Year round; midday light gives the strongest blue. Calm mornings are best for entry. Swell closes it entirely.

Honest expectations

Entry requires ducking under a submerged lip and is not for weak swimmers or anyone uneasy in water. Swell closes the cave and trips are cancelled at short notice. It is crowded with several boats at midday.

Nearby

Playa Santa Cruz is the departure point, and Playa Jeremi is north.
