Bariay Bay

On 28 October 1492 the Spanish expedition made landfall in Cuba, and the balance of scholarly opinion places it at Bariay, a shallow bay on the Holguin coast backed by low hills. A monument park was built for the five hundredth anniversary in 1992, with a modernist sculpture combining Spanish columns and indigenous forms, a reconstructed Taíno village and a small archaeological museum. The bay itself is undeveloped, and the landscape is close to what the description in the ship's journal records.

When to go

November to April is the dry season. The anniversary at the end of October brings events. The site is quiet at almost any other time and can feel deserted.

Practical notes

The exact landing point is disputed and other bays have been proposed, though Bariay is the mainstream view. The park has been under-maintained and parts are in poor condition. There is very little shade and no facilities to speak of.
