Zagreb Coffee Culture

Coffee in Zagreb is a length of time rather than a drink. The standard order is a small white coffee and the standard duration is an hour or two, seated outside, with one cup, watching the street. The ritual peaks on Saturday morning in what is called the špica, when the centre fills with people who have dressed for it, working the terraces on Bogovićeva, Preradović square and the streets around from about ten until one. Nobody hurries and nobody is expected to order again. Waiters will not clear your cup to move you along, and the whole thing is closer to a social institution than to a café scene.

When to go

Saturday between ten and one is the hour everyone means when they talk about this. Weekday mornings are calmer and just as pleasant. Terraces run most of the year thanks to heaters and blankets, and in December the Advent stalls move into the same streets, which changes the atmosphere entirely and makes a free seat hard to find.

What to expect

Service is unhurried to a degree that irritates anyone used to being served quickly, and getting the bill can take a while; that is the system rather than neglect. Coffee quality is average in most places, because the ritual matters more than the roast. Terraces on the main tourist runs charge noticeably more, and smoking outdoors is common with no way around it on a busy terrace.
