Krk Town

Krk town is the main settlement of the island and was the base of the Frankopans, the family that held Krk and much of the northern Adriatic hinterland through the middle ages, and their castle still stands on the harbour with its towers intact. The cathedral beside it is built into the remains of Roman thermal baths, and the floor level shows the older structure; the adjoining church of St Quirinus is stacked above a lower chapel, an arrangement that is unusual in the region. Roman and Venetian walls enclose the core, and the lanes inside are narrow and largely intact.

Honest expectations

Krk is the most developed Croatian island and the town is crowded in high summer. Parking outside the walls fills early. Church opening hours are limited. Beaches near the town are busy and mostly pebble or concrete.
