Grabovaca is a small hill near Perusic containing nine known caves and pits within a very small area, which is why it was made a park - the only protected area in Croatia set up specifically around caves rather than a landscape. Samograd, the show cave, is the one open to general visitors: a large entrance shaft leads into chambers with formations, and it has been visited since the nineteenth century, with a description published in 1898. The other systems, including Medina and Amidzina, are open only to organised speleological trips. A visitor centre at the foot covers karst formation and the underground fauna of Lika.

What you actually see

  • Nine caves in one small hill - the reason the park exists.
  • Samograd as the show cave - visited and described since the 1800s.
  • Restricted systems alongside - open only to caving trips.
  • A visitor centre on karst - the geology and underground life of Lika.

When to go

April to October; tours are seasonal. Half a day.

Honest expectations

Only one cave is open to general visitors; the others need arrangement and equipment. The path to Samograd is uphill and the descent inside is on steps. Hours are reduced outside summer.

Nearby

Plitvice is north-east; Gospic and Velebit are south.
