Fomboni is the main town of Mohéli, the smallest of the three Comorian islands, a low settlement on the north coast with a market, a harbour and a couple of streets, holding maybe twenty thousand people. Mohéli is the quietest of the islands, with the least development and the most intact environment, and Fomboni is where everything on it is arranged from. Mohéli was a separate sultanate before the French period, ruled for a time by a queen who came to the throne as a child. The island has fewer than fifty thousand people in total.

What you actually see

  • The market - the trading centre for the whole island.
  • The harbour - the small port on the north coast.
  • The scale - the main town of the least developed Comorian island.
  • The base function - where trips to the marine park are arranged.

When to go

May to October is the drier and cooler season. The rains run November to April with cyclone risk. Flights from Moroni are small and irregular.

Honest expectations

The town is very small with almost nothing arranged for visitors. Facilities are limited and power is intermittent. Flights are small and often cancelled.

Nearby

Lake Boundouni is east, and Itsamia is southeast.
