Fomboni

Fomboni is the main town of Mohéli, the smallest of the three Comorian islands, a low settlement on the north coast with a market, a harbour and a couple of streets, holding maybe twenty thousand people. Mohéli is the quietest of the islands, with the least development and the most intact environment, and Fomboni is where everything on it is arranged from. Mohéli was a separate sultanate before the French period, ruled for a time by a queen who came to the throne as a child. The island has around fifty thousand people in total.

When to go

May to October is the drier and cooler season. The rains run November to April with cyclone risk. Flights from Moroni are small and irregular.

Before you go

The town is very small with almost nothing arranged for visitors. Facilities are limited and power is intermittent. Flights are small and often cancelled.
