Tunja Historic Centre

Tunja was founded in 1539 on the site of a Muisca settlement and became the administrative seat of the province, which is why the houses are grander than the present size of the town would suggest. The interest here is indoors. The Casa del Fundador Suarez Rendon and the Casa de Juan de Vargas both have wooden ceilings painted in the sixteenth century with an odd mixture of Renaissance figures, plants, animals and heraldry, unlike anything else in the country. Inside the church of Santo Domingo, the Rosary Chapel is carved and gilded from floor to ceiling. The city itself is cold, windy and workaday.

When to go

December to March is drier, but Tunja is cold and windy in every month and evenings drop sharply, so bring more clothing than the latitude suggests. Museums and chapels keep short weekday hours, many close for lunch, and Monday closures are common, so a morning visit is the safe plan. Weekends are busier but more churches are open.

Honest expectations

Tunja is a working provincial city rather than a preserved showpiece, and the historic core is small and hemmed in by traffic and modern building. The best things are behind doors that are frequently shut, and opening hours are unreliable. It is genuinely cold and often grey. Most travellers stop for a few hours on the way to Villa de Leyva rather than staying the night.
