Suarez River Canyon

The Suarez runs through a gorge between San Gil and the Chicamocha, and the commercial section is class IV with class V features depending on level - continuous rapids, holes and drops with limited flat water between them, and it is run by operators from San Gil as the step up from the Fonce, which is the beginner river. Swims happen and are not trivial: the water is fast, the walls are steep in places and self-rescue is a real requirement, so operators screen participants and require a briefing. Levels vary substantially with rain, and at high water sections become unrunnable. The canyon itself is dry scrub and rock with the river cut deep into it, and it joins the Chicamocha downstream.

• A step up from the Fonce - which is the beginner river.
• A dry scrub canyon - cut deep, joining the Chicamocha.

Year round, subject to level. A full day.

Honest expectations

This is not a scenic float - swims are likely and consequential, and operators screen for a reason. High water closes it. Operator standards vary; check guides, equipment and safety kayaks. Not for non-swimmers or children.
