The Villa de Leyva valley is dry and eroded, so a wooded ravine with running water is a pronounced contrast - La Periquera is a private reserve on a stream that drops through a series of falls, four or five of them depending how you count, with pools at the base of several. Paths link them with steps and bridges through forest that holds ferns, bromeliads and birds including the parakeets the site is named for. Swimming is permitted in some pools, and the water is cold. Flow depends heavily on rain; in a dry spell the falls thin considerably. The reserve is privately run with an entry fee and basic facilities, and it is usually combined with the other sites on the same road out of Villa de Leyva.
