Rumah Baru Jetty

Rumah Baru is the jetty and boat ramp at the southern end of West Island, and it is where small craft go in for trips across the southern lagoon to South Island and the islets down that end. The name is Cocos Malay for new house. It is a working landing rather than a sight, with boats coming and going, fishing off the end and shallow clear water alongside. The road out runs the length of West Island and ends at the water beside the ramp.

When to go

April to October is drier with steadier trade winds. Tide governs launching. The wet season brings heavier weather.

Honest expectations

This is working infrastructure and not a destination in itself. There are no facilities. Crossings to South Island need a boat arranged, not just a walk down the jetty.
